Although for 20 years my medium of choice has been pencil portraits, you may find my artwork is anything but “black and white.” I enjoy the challenge of recreating the grey area that comes from an individual’s depth and personality.
Unlike many pencil drawings, my pictures are rich in details and texture. My examples on this page are to give you a glimpse of my work; however, these photocopies do not accurately distinguish the multilayered dimension that I most pride myself on. Using a unique method of layered texture lines, the fabrics, the hair, and even the skin of my portrait subjects are brought to a level of reality that is often only found in photography.

Ancestral Portraits
I combine my portrait and forensic art skills to recreate images of pioneer-era photographs to offer a more realistic image of a beloved ancestor by softening the sometimes gruff and somber expressions. I have recreated photos dating from the 1870's to the 1940's and nearly always there is photo damage, poor film quality or the image is very small. If there is very little detail to see, I will use my forensic skills and request photos of the subject's decendents so that I can draw the most accurate portrait possible.
Basic Pricing
Prices typically range from $300 to $500 for single subject portraits.
All artwork is priced on an individual basis according to size and detail. I will consider any size or photo that is meaningful to you.
To secure a commissioned portrait, I require 50% of the sale up front. I accept cash, check, or credit card.
Deseret News Article
"Her work continues in the crime forensic field, but her spiritual sensitivities and interest in family history have also drawn her to crafting portraits of Mormon pioneers. The subjects of pioneer-era photography often appear gruff and somber. Using the same skills demanded by crime forensic artwork, Sister Nielson is able to soften the expressions and features of her pioneer models, offering descendants a more "realistic" image of a beloved ancestor."
Las Vegas Review Journal Paragraph from Article
“What happened with the Smart case was amazing. I didn’t have a clue. I had never drawn anything from a description, something I couldn’t see,” Nielson said. “Now I know I can make a difference. It’s artwork that makes a difference. I can change people’s lives.”
